Michael Pilz – Himmel und Erde AKA Heaven and Earth (1983)

Michael Pilz’s 285-minute Himmel and Erde is an essay film or an ethnographic documentary about life in the Styrian mountain village of St. Anna. It contemplates the finite lot of individuals as part of a continuum of human experience in the natural world. Himmel und Erde, which translates to Heaven and Earth, was recorded between 1979 and 1982. The documentary invites the viewer to contemplate the disruptive effects of technology on economic and social ties through circumscribed vignettes of village life which are oft repeated either as recycled footage or variations on a theme. The film is a meditation on time, nature, and the struggles of man, as well as a record of a lifestyle ceasing to exist. “If you let it happen, the film will pull you into its cosmos; it is one of those works that teaches you to see and listen again.”

Ruth Beckermann – Die Geträumten AKA The Dreamed Ones (2016)

Quote:
The themes of love and hate are depicted in the movie. At center stage are the two poets Ingeborg Bachmann and Paul Celan, who came to know each other in post‐war Vienna. Their vivid postal exchange creates the textual basis of the film.

The dramatic, ecstatic, but also infinitely sad love story between Bachmann and Celan begins in 1948 when she is 22 and he is 27. It ends with the suicide of Celan in Paris in 1971. For Bachmann, he is the love of her life, however she never stops seeing him as a stranger and even harbours slight fears towards him. He was a Jew from Czernowitz,
whose parents perished in the Holocaust while she came from a milieu of National Socialism. Growing up in Carinthia, Bachmann witnessed little of the war and persecution. Love and friendship, but also doubts and disruptions permeate their lifelong relationship and in a moment of doubt Bachmann asks: “Are we only the dreamed ones?”.

Two young actors, Anja Plaschg and Laurence Rupp, meet in a recording studio to read the letters. The tumultuous emotions of proximity and distance, fascination and fear captivate them. However they also enjoy each other’s company, arguing, smoking, discussing their tattoos and favourite music. Yesterday’s love, today’s love and tomorrow’s: where the lines are blurred lies the heart of the film.

Paul-Julien Robert – Meine keine Familie AKA My Fathers, my Mother and Me (2012)

Description
What remains from childhood

Paul-Julien Robert‘s deeply moving and illuminating film „MY FATHERS, MY MOTHER & ME“

When it comes to processing contemporary history, especially events which have become a burden, it is possible to differentiate three dynamics. First of all, generally during a relatively short period after the past situation, comes a sensation of being overwhelmed, with emotionalised expressions of affirmation or rejection. This gives way to a cooler period of coming to terms with the past, relying heavily on facts rather than emotions in most cases. And thirdly, quite frequently at a much later date, a dialogue may take place, an exchange of information, a debate attempting to relate factual history and individual experience. The specific is brought to the forefront at the expense of the universally valid (whatever that might be). Events which happened to individuals may be comparable in historical terms, but the effect is de facto a mixture of extremely special and highly specific occurrences and circumstances. How long it can take until the narrative wins out, in complexity and ambivalence, over the historical events – this can be seen as much in the dramas of the 20th century as in stories of abuse in private life. The more unwavering the gaze, the richer the text.

Michael Haneke – Così fan tutte (2013)

Quote:
Who loves whom in Così fan tutte, Mozart’s and Da Ponte’s cruelly comic reflection on desire, fidelity and betrayal? Or have the confusions to which the main characters subject one another ensured that in spite of the heartfelt love duets and superficially fleetfooted comedy nothing will work any longer and that a sense of emotional erosion has replaced true feelings? Così fan tutte is a timeless work full of questions that affect us all. The Academy Award-winning director Michael Haneke once said that he was merely being precise and did not want to distort reality. In only his second opera production after Don Giovanni in 2006, he presents what ARTE described as a “disillusioned vision
of love in an ice-cold, realistic interpretation”. And according to the online version of ZEIT, six “fabulous vocal soloists cast from 120 international applicants” bring gentle melancholy and moving vulnerability to Haneke‘s radical staging.

Synopsis
A motor-sports spectacle that kicks up plenty of dust. On the trail of the 2007 Dakar Rallye ‘7915 KM’ undertakes a search, along the way encountering the variety to be found in Africa’s present in Morocco, Sahrawi Republic, Mauritania, Mali and Senegal. ‘7915 KM’ demonstrates the extent of this distance, which is the result of political and economic conditions, and also the ideas and prejudices to be found in both Europe and Africa. It also makes the closeness tangible, which becomes clear in the stories of everyday life, work, hopes and worries. Keeping the sobering reality in mind, it creates an homage to humanity and slowness which questions deep-seated perceptions and the role of Europeans in numerous, presumably African, problems

Three members of a middle-class family are followed as their lifestyle slowly disintegrates. Nothing spectacular happens: it’s just the dreary un-ending grind of a go-nowhere existence. The film’s final scene emulates Fassbinder, as the threesome bid auf wiedersehn to everyone and everything in a gaudy, grotesque manner. It goes without saying that Der 7. Whether in the countryside or on the edge of the city, amusement parks or fun fairs are hot across Europe. Their names, amusement parks and fun fairs, say it all: People want to be amused, they want to have fun. For example, at the Europark in southern Germany a dummy with a contorted face sits in an electric chair. Smoke comes out of him and a light flickers off and on from out of the roasted “brain” of the dummy, which shudders and cries in pain. A film on the culture of amusement in today’s “leisure” society.

Ulrich Seidl – Der Busenfreund AKA The Bosom Friend (1997)

$

A 1997 TV film. Two descriptions:

“Main character of this movie is Rene Rupnik, a former math teacher. He is forty years old and lives together with his mother in a desolate block of flats. Ever since his early youth women with big breasts have fascinated him, because they symbolise a kind of earth mother to him. He has never had an especially close relationship with his own mother; she was too ‘bony’ for him. Object of Rene’s fantasy is the actress Senta Berger, to him everything a woman should be. Standing by the blackboard and explaining the mathematical laws of sine and cosine (‘sinus’ is bosom in Latin), Rene sings the praises of the female curves and those of Santa Berger in particular. Filmmaker Ulrich Seidl let the former teacher speak freely about his obsessions and desires, intercutting his monologues with scenes from the protagonist’s day-to-day life.”

And…

“Rene Rupnik is a math teacher; Senta Berger is an actress (b. 1941). For the teacher, the curves of geometry evoke only woman’s breasts, especially the breasts of the actress. He watches her films over and over, for several years he has been examining and describing her body. He tries to transform it into geometry, to give it the validity of a mathematical fact. He considers himself an expert on breasts; his obsession leads to obscure theories about an ideal bra or the shaping of perfect breasts. The actress represents the unbeatable ideal. She fascinated him when he was young; today she is his perfect sinusoid. Rupnik does not need her physical presence, she probably does not attract him as a sexual fantasy, she is not an image for masturbation. She exists only in theory; she elevates his spirits of a mathematician.

In reality, he had to leave school and he lives on welfare together with his mother – he shares apartment with her, but he avoids her – they do not talk nor eat together. He is forty years old and unable of having a normal life. The world has shrunk into an old apartment filled with old newspaper and a strange, ugly relationship – he hates his mother, she is too flat and bony, so different from the picture of the actor that does not age.

At first sight, the film shot on the large format of Animal Love is less ambitious, it focuses on a single character, it softens the tense and intimate moments (the film does not wait for the audience to look away). The method of standard television documents does not open polemics about the intended and unintended, about the internal mechanics of the authentic. There’s an absence of opulent cynicism and coldness, the images from the apartment evoke mainly anxiety. It is an exercise in directing, a television comedy with a puppet affected by a bizarre obsession and the Oedipus Complex. This seems to be a time out, but also a next chapter of Seidl’s pubic anthropology.”
